Our Heritage Breed Livestock
Duel Purpose Heritage Chickens
Heritage Chicken must adhere to all the following: Heritage Chicken must be from parent and grandparent stock of breeds recognized by the American Poultry Association (APA) prior to the mid-20th century; whose genetic line can be traced back multiple generations. They must be reproduced and genetically maintained through natural mating. They must have the genetic ability to live a long, vigorous life and thrive in the rigors of pasture-based, outdoor production systems. Breeding hens should be productive for 5-7 years and roosters for 3-5 years. Heritage Chicken must have a moderate to slow rate of growth, reaching appropriate market weight for the breed in no less than 16 weeks. This gives the chicken time to develop strong skeletal structure and healthy organs.
Narragansett: This beautiful bird descends from a cross between the Eastern Wild Turkey and domestic turkeys brought to this country by Pilgrim colonists. It is named for the Narragansett Bay of Rhode Island. They are a rare, multicolored, medium-sized breed with hens weighing up to 17 lbs. and toms up to 30 lbs. Their body plumage is primarily black with bands of steel gray. They are known for being calmer than most and are good mothers.
Dexter Duel Purpose Cattle. Dexter cattle are among the smallest breeds of cattle in the world, standing 40" tall and weighing 700–900 pounds. The Dexter is a dual-purpose breed that is hardy, forage-efficient, and has excellent maternal qualities. Beef animals are expected to mature in 18 months and result in small cuts of high quality lean meat, graded US Choice, with little waste. The expectable average dress out is 60 to 70 percent of live weight. The beef produced by Dexters is well marbled and tends to be darker. Dexters produce a rich milk, relatively high in butterfat (4%) and the quality of the milk overall is similar to that of the Jersey. Some claim the milk is more naturally homogenised than other milk due to the smaller fat globules. Dexters can reasonably be expected to produce 2 to 2.5 gallons. For this reason they are excellent choice of milk cow for a family farm.
